Cypress is fairly simple to configure, but it’s important to optimize our experience in testing Cypress. We’ll configure the baseUrl to make it easier to visit our app and we’ll also move our test files to a folder called e2e to make it more clear what types of tests we want to write with Cypress. We’ll use the cypress.json file, but Cypress can also be configured via command line flags and environment variables.

Instructor: 00:01 In our Cypress test here, we have to call sign up visit with this full URL, which I don't really like. I'd rather just say, "Go to my app with the slash route, the home route." Actually, by providing this whole URL like this, we have a bit of a problem when we start our test.

00:15 If we click on run all specs, you'll notice that it does a quick refresh and that's a technical limitation of Cypress because it doesn't know what URL this should be set to at the time that it loads. We can configure Cypress and tell us where our app is going to be hosted right from the get go, so it doesn't have to do that reloading.

It makes my test a little bit nicer and it makes it so I don't suffer from that refresh problem. I go back here, run all the specs and you'll notice the refresh doesn't happen here.

00:54 The next thing that I want to configure about Cypress is I'm not a huge fan of using `integration` as the name for the directory where all my tests go, because I prefer to write my integration tests with Jest and React Testing Library, and I like using Cypress for end-to-end tests.

01:07 To communicate that better, I'm going to rename `integration` to `e2e`, and then I'm going to come in here to Cypress so that it knows where to find my end-to-end tests. We'll say `integrationFolder` will be `cypress/e2e`.

That will enable that improved folder name. I can go back to cypress now. I run all the specs, and everything continues to work.

01:26 The last thing that I want to do here is, you'll notice that our webpage is set to 1,000 by 600 is set by default for the resolution for the window size. If I resize my window, it actually keeps it right at that screen size, which is perfect.

01:39 It's not quite the experience that I'm trying to build with this app. I'm going to go ahead and configure that with `viewportHeight` set to `900` and `viewportWidth` set to `400`.

With that, Cypress will reload that configuration, and now it's looking perfect.

02:05 We can configure all of this stuff using the config file like were doing, or an ENV file, or ENV variables, or CLI arguments, or even a plugin file. For our use case, using the configuration file works just fine.

02:18 In review, what we did here was we wanted to move our tests to the e2e directory, so we set the integration folder to cypress/e2e. We wanted to avoid the refresh problem, so we set the base URL to localhost:8080, and now our site.visit can just reference routes of our app rather than the full URL.

Cypress starts out your project with a ton of tests, let’s remove those and add our first test that verifies our calculator can add two numbers together using the Cypress selector playground and Cypress commands.

We want to make starting cypress as simple as possible for local development and we need to be able to run a single script that exits when the tests are complete for continuous integration. So let’s add a few scripts to get ourselves setup for this development experience.

One of the greatest features of Cypress is how awesome the experience of debugging tests is. You do have to get used to the asynchronous nature of E2E testing, but once you get the hang of that debugging is pretty straightforward, and the ability to debug your own source code is awesome. The fact that your test and source code are executed in the same context also gives you some powerful advantages as well. You can potentially even expose some internal state to your Cypress app.

Debug a Test with Cypress

Let’s write a test to fill out our registration form. Because we’ll be running this against a live backend, we need to generate the user’s information to avoid re-runs from trying to create new users that already exist. There are trade-offs with this approach. You should probably also clean out the application database before all of your tests start (how you accomplish this is pretty application-specific). Also, if your application requires email confirmation, I recommend you mock that on the backend and automatically set the user as confirmed during tests.

Because Cypress allows you to use all the developer tools you’re used to from Google Chrome, you can actually use Cypress as your main application development workflow. If you’ve ever tried to develop a feature that required you to be in a certain state you’ve probably felt the pain of repeatedly refreshing the page and clicking around to get into that state. Instead, you can use cypress to do that and developer your application entirely in Cypress.

Cypress Driven Development

Normally I prefer to test error states using integration or unit tests, but there are some situations where it can be really useful to mock out a response to test a specific scenario in an E2E test. Let’s use the cypress server and route commands to mock a response from our registration request to test the error state.

To test user login we need to have a user to login with. We could seed the database with a user and that may be the right choice for your application. In our case though we’ll just go through the registration process again and then login as the user and make the same assertions we made for registration.
